Extended Project Qualification

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) allows you to fully develop the skills and experiences that are useful for progression to university and it offers the chance to go beyond the boundaries of A level subjects. It gives you the opportunity to choose any topic that you are interested in. The possibilities are endless but usually it will be a topic related to your higher education or career direction. The qualification carries more UCAS points than a stand-alone AS level following the changes to the UCAS tariff system, exceptional candidates can achieve an A*.

What does it involve?

  • Choose an area of interest
  • Draft a title and aims of the project for formal approval
  • Plan, research and carry out the project
  • Deliver a presentation to a specified audience
  • Provide evidence of all stages of project development and production for assessment.

How is the course assessed?

Evidence for assessment can be provided in any form appropriate to the type of project chosen including an artefact, model, performance, event, book etc. Most students are likely to produce a piece of written work which will be around 5000 words. Students will also complete a production log documenting the process with a consideration of their own strengths and weaknesses.

What are the entry requirements?

More than anything else, this qualification requires a high level of personal initiative, responsibility and motivation. To be successful you must have sound academic and organisation skills.

Why do the EPQ?

The EPQ provides you with an academic understanding beyond the syllabus within the classroom; this can then be used to inform personal statements and university interview answers to demonstrate subject interest and enthusiasm.
