What do I need to study the course?

 

A GCSE in Music. Students who have a passion for performing or composing would also be considered- do ask!

 

What does the course involve?

AS and A level music encourages individual musical development.  Students will be able to develop their own interests in music activities as well as study music from a range of traditions. Students will be assessed through a written examination that tests students’ aural ability, analytical skills and knowledge of musical history. Students will also be assessed through musical performance and composition.

 

AS Level

Component 1 – Appraising Music Examination:

40% of AS marks

For AS music, students will study Jazz music and music from the Western Classical tradition (1650 – 1910). The examination will be divided into three parts

  • Section A – Students will listen to familiar music of the Western Classical tradition and Jazz music. Students will be asked to recognise features from those excerpts and write a short essay for each area of study.
  • Section B – This section focuses on the Baroque era within the Western Classical tradition. Candidates will analyse a passage of music and write a short essay on the material. Students are given scores to accompany this section.
  • Section C – This section of the paper will ask students to write an essay on Jazz music, making reference to specific set works.

 

Component  2 – Performance:

30% of AS marks

Candidates will perform for a minimum of six minutes. This element of the course will be externally marked. The performance can be one or a combination of the following options:

  • Instrumental Solo performance
  • Vocal Solo performance
  • Instrumental Ensemble performance
  • Vocal Ensemble performance
  • Music production using technology

 

Component 3 – Composition:

30% of AS marks

Two compositions will be required for this element of the course:

  • Composition 1 – Students will compose to a set brief such as a harmonization of a chorale, music for lyrics, soundtrack for a film clip, music based on a chord sequence, a bass line, a scale or an image.
  • Composition 2 – Students are free to choose their own brief.

A minimum of four and a half minutes of music in total is required.

 

A2

Component  1 – Appraising Music Examination: 40% of AS marks

For A level music, students will study Jazz music, the Western Classical tradition (1650 – 1910) and Popular music. The examination will be divided into three parts:

  • Section A: Listening – Students will listen to familiar music of the Western Classical tradition as well as excerpts of Jazz and Popular music. Students will be asked to recognise features from those excerpts and write a short essay for each area of study.
  • Section B: Analysis– Students will answer questions relating to the Baroque solo concerto and 19th Century piano music and write a short essay about both areas of study. Students are given scores to accompany this section.
  • Section C: Essay – Students will write one essay answering either a Popular music question or a Jazz music question.

 

Component  2 – Performance:

35% of AS marks

Candidates will perform for a minimum of ten minutes. This element of the course will be externally marked. The performance can be one or a combination of the following options:

  • Instrumental Solo performance
  • Vocal Solo performance
  • Instrumental Ensemble performance
  • Vocal Ensemble performance
  • Music production using technology

 

Component 3 – Composition:

25% of AS marks

Two compositions will be required for this element of the course:

  • Composition 1 – Students will compose to a set brief such as a harmonization of a chorale, music for lyrics, soundtrack for a film clip, music based on a chord sequence, a pop music bass line, folk music for a set ensemble or using specific melodic motifs.
  • Composition 2 – Students are free to choose their own brief.

A minimum of four and a half minutes of music in total is required.

 

What next?

Music allows students to refine their analytical skills as well as essay writing technique in a creative context. A Level Music is really useful if you aspire to a career in Music as a performer, producer, composer or teacher. It is also valuable for Music journalism, Musical theatre, Arts administration and to access a degree in Music, Music Technology, Theatre Studies or Performing Arts.  Following A Level Music, Abbey Grange students have gone on to study at Music Conservatoires and LIPA, or into careers as professional musicians, DJs, composers and actors.
