“The caring manner in which the new academy sponsor has taken on the mantle of leadership is already giving staff confidence that it is now firmly within the family of church schools and that Christian values are beginning to be at its heart”
“The swift manner in which the Principal and the academy’s new sponsor, Abbey MAT, have identified areas for improvement and begun to address them is an emerging strength”
Section 48 Inspection Report, June 2017
Welcome to the new website for Bishop Young C of E Academy, part of Abbey Multi Academy Trust. We hope to use this website as one element of communication in our drive to fulfil our mission to ‘To work in Partnership to educate, nurture and empower’. As our website develops, we hope that you will discover the ways in which Bishop Young C of E Academy supports students to stretch them academically; supports them pastorally and, helps them develop the skills necessary to be participating adults in an ever changing world. We continually strive for excellence so that we prepare students not only for success whilst students at this Academy but sustain them for life after school.
We have high expectations of all our students and aim to equip them with the knowledge, skills and self-confidence they need to progress and achieve success. We want them to develop a life-long love of learning where they are motivated and stimulated by the world around them so that they can have a positive impact on their own life and the lives of others.
Our students flourish in an environment which is welcoming, caring, calm, disciplined, inspiring and purposeful. The greatest strength of the Academy is our focus on quality teaching and learning and our commitment to the learner, which enables progress and achievement at all levels. This is supported by a newly developed pastoral team and system where support and high expectations are rooted in mutually respectful relationships. Our dedicated and forward- thinking staff focus on our culture of challenging and inspiring students, in an environment of mutual respect where each child is recognised as unique and special.
We work as active partners with primary and secondary schools, both formally, as part of a developing Multi Academy Trust and informally, collaborating with partners as diverse as local universities; social enterprises; local and national businesses; the Diocese; international schools; and, of course, our local community. Our aim is to ensure that we enhance opportunities and experiences for all our students.
I welcome you to explore our website or visit the academy where you can learn more about our aim to work in partnership to educate, nurture and empower.
Mrs Carol Kitson, CEO/Executive Principal,
Abbey Multi Academy Trust
On behalf of our students, staff and Governors, I would like to welcome you to Bishop Young C of E Academy website.
I am exceptionally proud to be the Principal of our academy and I am privileged to be leading a team of outstanding staff who inspire and nurture our students to achieve both academic excellence and strength of character; and therefore produce young people who have a positive, transformative impact on their community.
We opened as a new academy in September 2017 and have introduced an innovative new curriculum which enables our students to be challenged from the moment they join us in Year 7.
At Bishop Young, our Christian Values underpin everything that we do. Support and encouragement is at our very heart, not just between staff and students but highlighted through the many student groups that exemplify their desire to give something back to the school community. Our student leaders in each year group all work hard to represent our values by caring for their peers and encouraging them to attain their personal goals. This ethos extends beyond the school gates and into the local community, illustrated by our ever strengthening ties with primary schools, resident groups and associations working together to enhance and strengthen the future for our community.
As a passionate sportsman and PE teacher, a key priority was to develop an outstanding programme of extra-curricular activities, not just in sport but to reflect all curriculum areas. We have done just that, with clubs and societies running on lunchtimes and after school every day. We challenge all of our students to join at least one club and believe that involvement in extra-curricular activities has a positive correlation with academic success and good physical and mental health.
I have a clear vision of what the academy will become and robust plans in place to ensure that all students excel academically, socially and emotionally in line with our Christian Ethos.
I strongly believe that parental partnership is vital to ensure the well-being and academic success of our students. Parents are an essential component of our school community. I therefore look forward to working closely with you to support your children.
I hope that you will enjoy exploring our website and getting to know us a little better. Of course, it is only by visiting Bishop Young that you will truly get a feel for the place. Each year we hold open evenings in the Autumn for parents of children in Year 6 and for prospective Sixth Form students. In addition, we are always keen to hear from like-minded colleagues from other institutions or from those interested in working with us in the future. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you wish to know more.
Mr Paul Cooper, Principal,
Bishop Young Academy
