The Governing Body is made up of individuals who are representative of different sections of the academy and the local community. Some are elected by parents and staff while the rest are appointed by the Trust; their term of office lasts for 4 years, after which they will need to be re-appointed if they wish to continue being a Governor. Currently our Governing Body is made up of the following people:

Tessa Mason (Chair of Governors)

Tessa Mason was a primary teacher for 25 years and a Headteacher in Leeds for 16 years prior to joining the Department for Education undertaking the following national roles: Regional Programme Leader for the Training & Development Agency (TDA) for schools (2007-2011), DfE NCSL Regional Associate (2011-2014) and is currently DfE Education Advisor for the Academies Division, Professional Mentor for the Arts Council England and DfE Teaching & Leadership Advisor in Yorkshire & the Humber for NCTL and ACOD. Living in Weetwood, Tessa is a mum and grandma.

Honor Byford (Governor)

Date of Appointment: 01 May 2017 (4 year term)

Honor Byford has spent 40 years working in education, initially teaching English and Drama in Humberside. For the majority of her career she worked in West Yorkshire and was Headteacher of Ryburn Valley High School, a large 11-18 comprehensive school near Halifax.


Latterly Honor has served as a Chair of Governors and sat on the North Yorkshire Secondary Improvement Board. She is now looking forward to working with everyone in the Bishop Young community to ensure all students achieve their very best.


In her spare time Honor enjoys keeping fit and watching live music.

Paul Cooper

(Academy Principal – Ex Officio Governor)


Paul Cooper began his career in education as a PE teacher at Woodkirk Academy, where he spent twelve years and held positions including Head of Year and responsibility for inclusion. In 2010, Paul joined Abbey Grange as Assistant Principal leading on inclusion and SEND, and was later appointed to the post of Vice Principal in charge of standards. Paul became Principal of Bishop Young Academy in April 2017. He has two young children, and holds interests including sport and keeping fit.
