This nationally recognised award celebrates schools that demonstrate outstanding standards in geography teaching and learning. It highlights the strength of our curriculum, the quality of teaching across the department and our commitment to providing students with engaging and meaningful geographical experiences.
The award follows months of reflection and evidence gathering by our geography department, showcasing our ambitious and inclusive curriculum. Our submission highlighted innovative teaching, opportunities for independent enquiry, valuable fieldwork experiences and the development of critical thinking skills. It also demonstrated how geography helps our students understand key global issues including sustainability, climate change, migration and development.
Head of Geography, Mrs Plews, said:
"We are incredibly proud to have been awarded the Geographical Association Secondary Geography Quality Mark for 2026-2029. This recognition reflects the dedication and hard work that has gone into developing geography at Bishop Young Academy over a number of years.
"The process gave us an opportunity to reflect on our strengths, celebrate our successes and identify ways to continue improving. Most importantly, it recognises the fantastic experiences and opportunities our students receive through geography."
This achievement reflects the dedication of our staff, the support of academy leaders and the enthusiasm our students show for geographical learning. It reinforces our commitment to delivering a curriculum that inspires curiosity, broadens horizons and prepares young people to engage with an ever-changing world.

As we celebrate this national recognition, we remain committed to building on this success and ensuring our students continue to benefit from exceptional geography learning experiences. This award places us among a select group of schools recognised nationally for excellence in geography education and is a testament to the hard work, passion and commitment of our staff and students.
